Sen. Schmidt
appointed to Washington state BRAC task force
February 4,
2005
OLYMPIA…Sen.
Dave Schmidt, R-Mill Creek, sponsored a resolution in the
Washington State Senate today to honor and recognize the
Washington National Guard.
“The National
Guard are everyday heroes who make everyday sacrifices,”
said Schmidt, a 22-year veteran of the Army National Guard.
“They play a variety of roles and we rely upon them in so
many ways. From serving in Iraq to serving in the middle
of local, natural disasters, the National Guard are ready at a
moment’s notice to assist and protect.”
Schmidt’s
resolution comes on a day (Jan. 26) set aside as National
Guard Recognition Day.
During a speech
on the Senate floor, Schmidt asked the President of the
Senate, Lt. Gov. Brad Owen, for permission to fly a special
Washington State Flag in the Senate Chambers.
“This flag has
been flying over Camp Anaconda, the largest support base in
Iraq,” Schmidt said. “This camp is nicknamed
‘Mortaritaville’ because of the frequency of mortar and
rocket attacks. We have current and past members from
the Washington National Guard stationed at Camp Anaconda, Mr.
President, and I think it would be very appropriate for us to
find a special place for this flag here in the Senate Chambers
for the remainder of their time in Iraq.”
Schmidt said
Owen is considering displaying the flag in the Senate Chambers
until the end of the 2005 legislative session.
Schmidt’s
resolution, Senate Resolution 8604, passed the Senate
unanimously, 49-0.
